I would like to build sloops like the Azalea class, Aubrietta class and the Arabis class. I would also like to build Armed Merchant Ships that would be used for raiding as they are, but convoy escorts. Minimum speed should be 14 knots. The sloops would be about 1200 tons.
I believe that these boats would be appropriate for smaller, less economically able nations to build to augment corvettes, and destroyers. Just another tool in the tool box. If the design goes over a certain limit, it should be renamed as a destroyer or corvette. Thanks.
HMS Arabis, Great Britain Sloop laid down 1915
Displacement:
744 t light; 781 t standard; 919 t normal; 1,029 t full load
Dimensions: Length overall / water x beam x draught
255.25 ft / 255.25 ft x 33.50 ft x 11.90 ft (normal load)
77.80 m / 77.80 m x 10.21 m x 3.63 m
Armament:
4 - 4.70" / 119 mm guns in single mounts, 51.91lbs / 23.55kg shells, 1915 Model
Breech loading guns in deck mounts
on centreline ends, evenly spread
2 - 1.85" / 47.0 mm guns in single mounts, 3.17lbs / 1.44kg shells, 1915 Model
Breech loading guns in deck mounts
on side, all amidships
Weight of broadside 214 lbs / 97 kg
Shells per gun, main battery: 150
Machinery:
Coal fired boilers, complex reciprocating steam engines,
Direct drive, 1 shaft, 2,118 ihp / 1,580 Kw = 17.00 kts
Range 2,000nm at 15.00 kts
Bunker at max displacement = 248 tons (100% coal)
Complement:
83 - 108
Cost:
£0.099 million / $0.395 million
Distribution of weights at normal displacement:
Armament: 27 tons, 2.9 %
Machinery: 139 tons, 15.1 %
Hull, fittings & equipment: 579 tons, 63.0 %
Fuel, ammunition & stores: 174 tons, 19.0 %
Miscellaneous weights: 0 tons, 0.0 %
Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
2,531 lbs / 1,148 Kg = 48.8 x 4.7 " / 119 mm shells or 1.0 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.04
Metacentric height 1.0 ft / 0.3 m
Roll period: 13.8 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 80 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.41
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 2.00
Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak
Block coefficient: 0.316
Length to Beam Ratio: 7.62 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 15.98 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 39 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 40
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): -1.00 degrees
Stern overhang: 0.00 ft / 0.00 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 20.00 ft / 6.10 m
- Forecastle (20 %): 20.00 ft / 6.10 m
- Mid (50 %): 20.00 ft / 6.10 m (17.50 ft / 5.33 m aft of break)
- Quarterdeck (15 %): 17.50 ft / 5.33 m
- Stern: 17.50 ft / 5.33 m
- Average freeboard: 18.75 ft / 5.72 m
Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 72.3 %
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 215.6 %
Waterplane Area: 5,037 Square feet or 468 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 187 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 45 lbs/sq ft or 218 Kg/sq metre
Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 0.74
- Longitudinal: 15.47
- Overall: 1.00
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is excellent
Room for accommodation and workspaces is excellent
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
Excellent seaboat, comfortable, can fire her guns in the heaviest weather
Mission - Minesweeping, patrol, tugs, cargo and personnel transport. Possible to build at almost any shipyard.
