I like idea of support force. It give a lot of similarities with history, not risking heavy units being far from the danger but available to come into area.
However it seems that there is need some tweaking in support force. In large engagements it seems reasonable but in small engagements (destroyer and cruiser actions) it seems quite weird sometimes in case of destroyer engagement having dozen destroyers in main force and only 1 to 2 destroyers in support force.
I would suggest in these cases that battle generator will split force more equal that support force has some meaning or decide that there is no support force. But having so small support force is quite weird.

assuming you are talking about support forces which has a check box in settings to turn on/off, i have kept it turned off after playing RtW1 for a couple years since in areas where you have only a few ships stationed i noticed it takes away from the forces you might have under control in a battle, and i would rather be in control of all participating ships in any battle
that being said, if at the start of a battle you are given the maximum amount ships you can control for it's size, and then left over ships were assigned to support forces as a 'bonus' to you that would be fine, but (in RtW1) it seemed that support forces reduced the maximum amount of ships you were given control of in battles so i have kept that option unchecked since

I like RTW1 principle more, but I understand it is more matter of taste.
