I dunno, managing to send an oil-exporting nation into a fuel shortage takes some genius right there. Helpful when your opponents hang themselves with their own gallows and a little pushing.

Who says a ban on sales to a country doesn't work... it does in a globalized economy especially when all other nations participate. Maybe a new era in economic warfare, possibly.

Russia hasn't helped itself by using the state security apparatus to bring a lot of their energy industry under direct Kremlin control. Business and investing aren't my strong suits, but I wouldn't put my money in a country where the local strongman can have a hissy fit and send his goon squad to take over my assets. Likewise, if countries can find an energy source that won't try to shut their gas off in the dead of winter just to make a point, they will do so.

I haven't been focusing on the Russia as of late, but it appears that they don't really understand the concept of a market economy or a globalized economy. I am no expert, but it would seem to me, that they need to examine their priorities, increase exports of oil, natural gas and other natural resources, and change their balance of payments. They need to move towards a more liberalized government, and clamp down on the Russian mafia and let the businessmen get moving. Military spending has to be reduced along with other government expenditures. More investment in upgrading industries like oil and gas plants, along with converting aircraft manufacturers to private and commercial aircraft. They have a lot of work to do, and are getting farther and farther behind every years. Putin must go, either quietly or with a new revolution.
