In one of my recent games, some of the developments led to my seaplanes being MUCH better performers than my contemporary fighters. I wonder if we could capitalize on circumstances like this by using our seaplanes to perform CAP? It will give additional utility to AV, Tone-like cruisers and Ise-like battleships. Especially in the case of latter two - 2 catapults might not be able to launch any significant strike in a timely manner, but could be used to keep up CAP.
It would be even better if we could design specialist seaplane fighters, like Japanese did, making them a distinct class of aircraft. Of course, seaplanes would be generally inferior to normal fighters, but why not let us try and make best of them? Even more so, it would be nice if we could have a few more classes we could either develop or assign to aircraft, like interceptor, fighter/bomber and such. Such specialized design were a thing in real life, after all, and would certainly make aircraft strategy more interesting than now, where we have to design multirole aircraft at all times. An alternative solution would be to allow us to choose a preferred aircraft for each squadron, but it has drawbacks.
Granted, any such changes would affect mostly just fighters and seaplanes, but they are still worthy of consideration, in my opinion.

I realize this isn't the main point of your post but I want to point out that you can provide CAP with your seaplanes. If you open the status screen for the seaplane division (or any division) you will see a field labeled "Provide CAP to" toward the bottom of the screen. You can use this field to select any friendly division. The ships in the seaplane carrier division will use their planes to provide CAP to the selected division. This can even be used to provide seaplane CAP above the seaplane carrier division itself. This can also be used by carrier divisions to direct their CAP to support another division.

Okay, thank you, that basically resolves the first half of my post. I was not aware that this setting also affects seaplanes, as they generally are treated a bit differently from other planes.
