Hi, I tryed playing RTW2 again after a long time, and I have noticed something. When I research some small improvements (engine, AA, FC, etc...), I have no idea which one is applied automaticaly to all ships and which one needs a refit. I know that armor improvements cannot be aplied on already existing ship, but what about for example secondary gun hoists improvements? Will it remove the twin turret debuff automaticaly, or do I have to refit the ship? Or what about 15ft rangefinder? Is it put on the ship immediately? I think that some research announcements should contain something like "applied immediately", or "refit to apply", or "not for already existing ships".

As far as I understand it, this is how it works:
Anything that reads "gradual improvement.." is applied immediately. Anything that reads "enables..." only takes effect after a refit (Director firing, Extended DC storage, Light AA and so on)
Exemption: Armor related stuff only applies to ships build _after_ the improved armor is developed and no, a refit won't help here.

Here's a small exception: Improved turrets, which remove operational problems with 3 and 4 gun turrets, will only take effect following a refit. You don't have to do anything specific other than undergoing a refit for the turrets to be improved.

That's always seemed odd to me, because when you look at the Damage Control tree, the majority of this stuff probably couldn't be applied retroactively

In-game we don't carry out refits, only rebuilds which are far more extensive.
Looking at that list:
Torpedo Protection already has limitations applied (Techs 2, 4, 10 and 12).
Design features should only apply on a new design - the ones I can identify being double*/triple bottoms (techs 0, 5 and 8) and improved subdivision (tech 1).
The rest are items that would be added or replaced during a minor refit, which means in game they are applied as soon as the tech is researched.
*Double bottoms - including full length double bottoms - existed and were used on warships prior to 1900. I believe in this case the tech is to represent this tech being used on all warships, therefore it can be argued as a "gradual" design here as well.
