recently i'v started micromanaging my aircraft a little more, and instead of just having the fastest fighter or whatever in service my minimum standard for a new plane to equip my squadrons is to have a minimum of 'average' reliability
in order for me to find out what kind of reliability a plane has i have to wait 2-6 months, during which time the new design starts equipping my squadrons
however i noticed that as soon as it a new aircraft starts equipping squadrons, it stops producing and equipping squadrons with the older design which i still want to keep in service until i know the new design is up to my standards
what's the issue is that if the new design turns out to have poor reliability and i don't want it in service so i mark it as obsolete, the older design that i want to continue equipping my squadrons with will no longer be produced and will no longer equip my squadrons
it's like as soon as i bring in a new design the old one is considered immediately obsolete whether i mark it as obsolete or not
i try to make it so that i only have 1 aircraft in service for each type, but it seems as soon as you design a new aircraft it renders all older aircraft of the same type obsolete and will only allow you to produce the newest design, even if it's inferior
if i have a specific design in service for a role then the game should produce and equip squadrons with that design no matter how many new deigns have come after it, and if some of the squadrons with the older design get replaced with a newer design and then i consider the new design obsolete before the older design, then all the new design squadrons should revert back to the older design that i still want in service
this also makes it impossible to have multiple aircraft designs with the same role, since if you have say 2 fighter designs in service the game will always choose the latest of the 2 designs for production and ignore the older design, even though i want both to equip my squadrons
last game i had 2 fighters that can into service within 1 turn of each other, and i liked both designs so i wanted both to equip my squadrons, but the game considered the design that came into service 1 turn before the 2nd one obsolete and it never built any aircraft even though they both came into service at essentially the same time and i didn't mark either as obsolete

Based up what you are saying, what you are observing was normal. New versions of an older aircraft or a new design were replaced squadron by squadron when the carrier was in port, say Pearl Harbor. Ewa Field would be the location of the new squadrons. The planes would already be in place, tested and ready. Depending on their condition, the older aircraft would either be sent to the bone yard, or to a depot to be refurbished and maybe sent to the Marines or given to an ally like Great Britain. Sometimes, they would be used to equip the light and escort carriers so that the latest aircraft could equip the fleet carriers. This is how the F4F was handled. There is no way to know how reliable an aircraft is going to be, initially. In fact, it could be a couple of years or combat that would provide that information and force NAVAIR to investigate and find the solution. Generally, the O level and I level maintenance crews were come up with the solution. Frankly, the AI is NAVAIR and it decides when and where an aircraft is built and scrapped eventually, not you the admiral. Sorry but that is how it is. All Navy's operate in that manner, British included. However, this procedure would not necessarily be applicable to the game. The game is simplified so when an aircraft is superseded by a newer aircraft, budget wise, it makes sense to scrap the older aircraft.

you may have missed the point of my post, which is fine since i wrote a wall of words
TLDR if i obsolete a new aircraft design my aircraft production goes to zero since the game will not restart production of any older type i want to keep in/continue service
if an aircraft is a design disaster you shouldn't be forced to use it just because it's newer
perhaps in the same way you can mark an aircraft 'obsolete' (o) you could also be able to mark an aircraft type 'in production' (p) so the game produces an aircraft type and equips squadrons with it regardless of it's age
when an aircraft finishes development it would not get a (p) until the player marks it with a (p), and any aircraft not marked with a (p), (o), or 'in development' would be considered 'under evaluation' and only allowed to equip a single (auto-made reserve?) squadron to signify the aircraft is not in full production yet and is still being evaluated. if you want to get a faster evaluation you could assign that reserve squadron to a combat posting (if at war) to get a faster evaluation of the design's final abilities

I deleted the unneeded post.

I would add one more thing to it:
"Preffered model" for squadron. Add it to a right-click menu on aircraft squadron, to allow for "default" or specific model. If a specific model is selected then the squadron will prioritize being equipped with planes of that model if they are available. Would allow us more airgroup freedom, for example assigning fighter-bombers to carriers that cant afford a fully-specialized airgroups.
