I got this idea to ad the option of mounting 2 secondary turrets on the centerline superfireing over the main battery like the American cruisers or the Yamato. I know you can technically already do that by adding an uneven amount of turrets, but these don’t show in the ship view, and the new tech would preferably be visible.
I imagine that the centerline turrets would provide a much superior arc of fire, allowing you to get a more efficient broadside than a ship without them at the cost of weight and perhaps also limiting main battery centerline mounts, like prohibiting them on ships with more than 3 centerline mounts on less than 17000 tons displacement, meaning that the (fictional) design of the USS Buffalo would still be possible without making the tech the meta, you could also limit total gun count instead of turret mounts on ships of less than 17000 tons displacement to 9 guns. I also imagine that they would free up deck space for AA guns.
Here is my take:
1930~1935: Centerline Secondary mounts.
allows for 2 secondary, non casemated, secondary guns no larger than 5” to be mounted on the centerline on CL/CA with no more than 9 main battery guns 7” or larger, or 12 guns for 6” or smaller on ships with less than 17000 tons displacement. Limits main battery mounting points on the centerline to ABXY or AB(C)LQ (you don’t need to use al four, but you can’t mix the two layouts, no ABQY, ABVX or ABLY) on ships smaller than 17000tons displacement. Maybe also limit the tech to ships with AoN arm our scheme.
1936~1942: Larger secondary Centerline mounts.
Enables centerline secondary turrets on BB/BC up to 8”. Limits the mounting positions for main battery guns to ABXY or AB(C)LQ. Again, consider limiting the tech to ships with AoN armor scheme.
I think these techs would allow for more interesting choices when designing ships, with the ability to get a more efficient broadside at the cost of total number of guns and weight. The overall weight savings would probably be worth it, but you loose out on having more than 16 guns on battleships, with large penalties for CL/CA with more than 16 guns as you are adding more turrets.
This tech would allow for ships like:
MN clemencau and Casgogne of the French navy, not completed but using centerline mounts for the secondary guns.
IJN Yamato and Musashi, using centerline secondary mounts.
USN all-gun cruisers after the Uss Wichita.
Perhaps even more that I am forgetting, but what do you people on the forum think, would it work?
