Attached file is a sample of several fights where I saw this odd behavior that I finally realized is they are not retreating to the nearby Dijbouti.
Dijbouti is on the south end of the route from the Suez canal going to the India ocean. Thus in many games, especially as IJN as in this game, I like to get it as a war settlement colony. This role play is the ability to influence that shipping route with ships, planes and MTBs that would have the range in real life to pinch that end of the shipping route. In this game Britain got an invasion started which has been going on a very long time. So I've seen many battles in the Red Sea.
At times when ordering retreats from fights in the Red Sea I had several times that instead of sailing down the Red Sea SE to the nearest of my colony at Dijbouti. Instead they sail north east, into the eastern bank of the Red Sea.
The attached battle is a DD on DD fight over a convoy. One of the DDs, the Yayoi, has been detached (and rejoined on his own then detached again). The lonely hurt fellow keeps sailing north east. What possible port is he trying to sail too? Homeland Japan?
As a note on setting the battles a lot of the battles have been in the Red Sea. There has been a few on the mouth on the India sea side. As Im playing Japan or more importantly not in charge of Eygpt and thus not using the Suez it does seem wierd that I am defending my own convoys coming south from the closed Suez when they really should be coming from the east. Perhaps the battle setup should check who controls the Suez when setting up defend a convoy battle.
