question, is the game programmed to always have you going to war with britain in the mid game? i got out of a war with them about 1927 and like 6 months later our tension was back at 8 or 9 without me doing anything, game randomly jumped the tension at least two to three points without any prompting

Is your espionage on britain high? I had same prob w USA, but stopped spying on them, and they seem mellower now.

That may depend on the nation you play and the strategy you choose. As for me, I seldom had war with Britain before 1940 when I played France.

The game picks one nation to be the player's rival. When the player has resolved their dispute with that rival, the game picks another nation to be the player's rival.
It's a bit more sophisticated than that, but it takes great morale courage (or pragmatic cowardice) to avoid war in the game.
