Previously there was a bug where you could keep re-bulging a ship to get ever expanding tonnage. The latest version has a chewing-gum fix where rebuilds of a bulged ship automatically remove the bulges with no option to re-add them (but keep the tonnage.) I don't particularly care for having to remove my ship's torpedo protection because I wanted to upgrade its fire control or somesuch, so here is what I do:
Whenever I create a bulged rebuild, after saving, I do not go to the build screen, and instead continue working on the design - which is now something like Shipname (R 19XX). I simply untick the bulged box, and reduce main guns ammo to 30 in order to get the unbulged version of the rebuild to qualify as "considerably" rather than "seriously" overweight. Save that and it becomes Shipname (R 19XXa). Then I rebuild the ship as Shipname (R19XX). Later, when I want to rebuild the ship again, I open the save file RTWGameX.bcs in notepad (or notepad++) and CTRL-F to search for the name of the ship I'm rebuilding. I change "ShipXXClassName=Shipname (R19XX)" to "ShipXXClassName=Shipname (R19XXa)" and also reduce the displacement by 500 and increase speed by 2 in the lines immediately below. Save, reload the game, rebuild the ship and add bulges (and also repeat the process in case I need yet another rebuild.)
Tedious of course but it does the job. Perhaps the game should do something similar behind the scenes - just a suggestion.
