I am on Christmas vacation and play with my old gaming laptop at 1900x1200 with Vista. In battles (and the reports at their end), when I open the detailed information window of a ship the bottom fifth (with, among other things, the torpedo information) is cut off and I cannot resize or scroll the window to show it.

Do you have large font size set?

No, but I have a custom font size set at 110 DPI.

tbr,
This sounds like a DPI scaling issue...I am not sure if the below suggestion is possible in Vista, as the way DPI scaling is handled by Windows changed starting with Windows 8, but if possible I suggest you try it: Right-click on the RTW executable, select 'Properties", click on the "Compatibility" tab, check the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" checkbox, then click on the "Apply" button. I am not certain this will correct the issue (or is even possible) in the Vista OS, but I do know it helps in some cases - in any event let me know if it helped at all.
Thanks.

While I have that option in the compatibility tab checking it does not solve the issue.

tbr -
Try setting the font size on your machine to the normal (default) font size, let us know if that corrects the issue.

While I have that option in the compatibility tab checking it does not solve the issue. Does the game have a settings mode of windowed vs full screen? I don't have the game and have never had Vista. If it does, put the game in the Windowed mode and run it. I have at least two old games that have to run in the windowed mode to work properly. You may find that you have much more control over the presentation with that mode. You can also try reducing the resolution of the computer down. Start with 800 x 600 which is not very good, but you have to have a starting location. After that, increase the resolution up in increments at a time and see where the game works the best and where it fails. You might be able to create a custom shortcut that will put the screen resolution into the proper one that works then resets on termination of the game. It can be daunting, but this maybe the only solution next to upgrading Vista to Window 7.

oldpop2000 -
RTW does not have a 'windowed' mode. Also, the minimum screen resolution for the RTW game is 1024 x 768, so that would be the lowest anyone would want to try.

Okay, I did not know that, but he can try to move to the lowest resolution and work up from there. This maybe the only solution short of upgrading to a better operating system. Vista was never one of Microsoft's better moments in operating system history.

Since the "old" Vista machine is a laptop and the "new" one a tower I have the laptop with me. Thought it would be more comfortable than my Windows Tablet I use on business travel.

The older laptops did not have the resolution extent that desktops did and that is still the case. You are going to have problems even if you did upgrade to windows 7. The cost of the upgrade for an older laptop, is probably not worth it. I would say that if you did decide to purchase a new laptop, a gaming laptop isn't required for most IGOUGO games. They generally don't have the resolution requirements of first person shooter types. If you don't play those types of games, then a cheaper laptop with a larger screen could be the best buy. Ensure that it has adequate processor speed and 8GB of RAM. Most come with a good size hard disk adequate for most games. Just my opinion, others might think differently. Good luck.

Got rid of the bug with the standard 96dpi. My gaming rig in my flat is still fully sufficient, though I might look at a new one in the next year. To date I can run mots of anything I want to at close to maximum settings. Though recently I have only been playing RTW...
