I can't seem to understand how CAP works. I select my main battle force and set maximum CAP but there is never a single fighter flying over my battleships, they just cover the carriers.

Right click on your division on the map or status on division in your OB and than you can request CAP for that division from airbase or if the division is carrier division you can provide CAP to 1 another division. See picture.

When you set CAP to protect a different division (using the "Provide CAP to" field) the game will devote 1/2 of its available CAP aircraft from that carrier to the remote division. It will not move any fighters that are currently in the air on a CAP mission. These will remain in the air executing their CAP mission until it is completed. Instead, the game will attempt to create a new CAP mission with any fighters that are currently in the hangar and unassigned. These fighters will then need to be readied and spotted on deck before they can fly the mission. They will then need to Fly to the supported division, resulting in reduced time over the supported division. CAP fighters will return to base when they have expended 50% of their fuel or if they have expended all of their ammunition and possibly if they are damaged. All of those circumstances mean that flying remote CAP must be carefully planned well in advance, preferably on turn 0 before any CAP is launched or the effort will be quite anemic.

Ohh I see now, thank you, I don't know how I missed that. I was always looking in the airstrike tab.
