Suspected so did a test with 2 BCs, one equipped with Director and one with Improved Director, closing to <10000 yards of 2 enemy BCs. The Hit Chance window with the Director equipped BC shows: Fire control: 0 (Director) With the Improved Director equipped BC shows: Fire control: -20 (Improved director) I then opened up range to >10000 yards, and the hit chance window with the latter then shows: Fire control: 10 (Improved director). Is it correctly working that Improved Director is worse off vs Directors under 10000 yds? And if it is correct, as i'm pondering over with current game is it worth refitting with Improved Directors if main fighting arena is the rainy north sea?...

Due to hectic work schedule my down time is rather unpredictable. having a large chunk of free time atm I dunno when the next time this nice bliss comes... So in the interim I did some personal fumbling to better deal with this problem in the next few days.
Therefore when the dev team addresses this one, plz completely skip the below wall of text and save you some time! (it's just i'm not sure i'll be free to lengthily play this game again, so atm am bothering with it!)
method 1: deal with it as a technological challenge. imagine an invention during the dreadnought madness era of a "Long Range" Director, pseudo-named Improved Director, that trades off close range accuracy for long range accuracy. tis essentially what we now have. with some experimenting it seems the kinky nature of Improved Director does present an interesting build option: To use or not to use? For capital ships, while Improved director gives better hit rates at range, once it rains, or becomes night or both, i find the hit rate drop noticeable (to compare, Central Firing is -10). But, if an engagement starts from day and progresses into night, and without improved director, you could have suffered significant damage during day time long range shooting, that when night comes the only option left is to retreat. Then again, if you optimize for close range fighting, due to torpedos and very deadly close range gunfire, risks are very high and your chances of making contact reduces dramatically because of very small sight ranges (-> night fighting prolly belong to a whole new topic!...) So, long story short, neither can be completely replaced by the other, and what i've settled with is, when refitting a central firing equipped ship, I go for Improved director. If it already has director installed, i do not change FC-> this also saves a bit of cash.
However. Do not use Improved Director on CL or DDs!! reason is apparent i reckon, stuff like raider intercept, cruiser action, DD action, most of the time you strive for within 10k yds range. You will be better off even with central firing!
Method 2: Mod out the research of Improved director and jump directly to Advanced director, by editing the research file ResearchAreas.dat
[Fire control 3] ..... Secondary director;1914;N;80;10;45;Enables directors for secondary battery and for CL
Improved Advanced Director;1918;N;100;15;4647;Enables improvedadvanced director on ships Synthetic fire control computer;1922;N;100;14;48;Reduces penalty for own ship turning
Advanced director;1926;Y;80;22;47;Enables advanced director on ships
or what it comes to
[Fire control 3] ... Secondary director;1914;N;80;10;45;Enables directors for secondary battery and for CL Advanced Director;1918;N;100;15;47;Enables advanced director on ships Synthetic fire control computer;1922;N;100;14;48;Reduces penalty for own ship turning [Subdivision and damage control 4]
The research would jump directly to Advanced Director. This apparently also makes Improved Director available, but for ships larger than DD it should be irrelevant. For DDs, since the best they can have is Improved Director, one will have to manually downgrade it to Director and ignore the shipdesign warnings. But tis should be the same using either method.
