I was wondering if it was possible to mod the available gun sizes and the dock size/ max ship size, and if so how would one go about it. Also it would be nice if we had a thread devoted to modding tips and information.

Nope, hardcapped at 52 kilotons now. (Although, if we pester the **** out of the programmers, they'd probably change that... *Wink wink*)

I was thinking about going the other way and limiting the max ships size to around 25,000 tons

I was thinking about going the other way and limiting the max ships size to around 25,000 tons Hmm, not possible IIRC. But then again, I doubt it'd be that hard to add. Kind of funny actually. The devs REALLY want this to be as historically accurate and reasonable as possible, and yet we really cannot help but admit that going tangent from that would be more FUN! Haha!

For the ship size limit you could mod in a treaty to do that. You would have to reset it every time a war occurred, but it would keep larger ships from being laid down in most cases.

And you can make it with any gun size and tonnage restrictions you want.

My thinking was that there is a hard cap in place for both the guns (18") and ship size (52,000 tons), the only question being where the vales are stored and how to change them without breaking the game. I have experimented with editing the dock size and gun size in the Bnat file, but it only retards the size progression and the legacy ships can mount the normal weapons

Those values are hardcoded in.
Not sure if you can change them, maybe hex editing?

Fredrick, would it be possible to obtain the location of and the corresponding hex values of the hard caps?

What do you want to do? Lower the ship size and gun calibre limits? For what purpose?
The things that are made to be moddable in the game are the nations and their data. If I get a clear picture of what people would like to mod and the purpose, it might in some cases be possible to make other things moddable, but I need to understand what it is intended to acheive.

I think one option that might be interesting is a way to change how much the dockyard expansion gives in terms of tonnage. I find its too easy to get to the 30k+ bracket even by 1910-12, and its probably even worse when playing with reduced research speed. Maybe some kind of similar % based reduction option as with research? I think something like 1000-1500t for the manual expansion would push that date out closer to a more realistic 1915-16.

Fredrik Because RTW is based on reality, different nations and games all have capital ship designs starts to converge on the most cost effective ship with 3 to 5 center-line turret sporting a total of 8-15 guns at 14"-16", with 9"-13" of belt armor and 2.5"-4.5" deck, doing around 25-30 knots at 34,000 to 40,000 tons. By being able to set hard caps on ship size and gun caliber it would force both the AI and the player to explore different capital ship designs and maybe even change the balance between cruisers and Capital ships (I am not referring to the 20,000+ ton monsters that show up on the forums). At the present I find designing mid to late capital ships to be a chore, whereas CA's and CL's are more diverse in their design and generally an experiment in a new doctrine. The new research rate control helps with Design convergence, but by 1918 at 30% research speed, the same old BB an BC show up.
For the docks it might help to make the upgrades progressively more expensive, going from 1,000,000 at the first upgrade to 20,000,000 at the tenth upgrade.

A list of things we seemingly want to mod. Max ship size (I know, this one is iffy, because you guys would need to work on the engine HP values and such...) Dock size. Gun size. Dock expansion.

Good, thanks, I will see what can be done. Others who want something to be moddable, please add it to the list.
