What about the unrotated projectile (rocket) barrage AA system? From what I know, it wasn't effective, but it was developed and installed on ships including HMS Hood. That could be a cool thing for 'varied tech' - the Japanese also had some more conventional AA rockets, and the British had some conventional AA rocket systems for their merchantmen as well (all not terribly effective). But the UP barrage system on the BBs that fired up a 'net' to catch aircraft in was something else, kooky science at its best .
