I looked over the dev diaries and the March of Submarines thread, but I couldn't find the answer to this question: will submarine design and operation continue to be abstracted to the same degree as in RTW1, or will there be a more detailed simulation of submarine design and warfare, given the rise in the complexity and effectiveness of subs between 1925 and 1950? Apologies in advance if this has already been asked and answered.

Apologies in advance if this has already been asked and answered. I've been curious about this too, and the devs haven't mentioned anything about submarines so far--which leads me to believe that it's as simple as a linear expansion of the existing submarine tech chain so that the maximum reliability of submarines increases.

Reading between the lines, I think it will be much the same as RTW. Nuclear subs have already been ruled out due to the inevitable link to nuclear weapons and beyond that there will never be a sub engagement. Therefore, there's no point having anything other than the different sub classes already available. Perhaps there'll be a "Fleet Submarine" or "Attack Submarine" class focused on killing other subs past 1940, but it probably won't be anywhere near the level of design available for surface vessels, or even aircraft.
I do hope I'm completely wrong though.

Submarines will function much as pirateradar surmized, as a limited extension of the tech chain. Getting aircraft to work in all the ways we would expect and want them to is such a big job that submarines will just continue to be abstracted. Submarines do eventually come to rule the waves, but the game we have is about the capital ship era. Submarines might be fertile ground for a modder though, if they were so inclined at some future date.

Thank you for the response, I am already extremely happy with what we're getting, and it's good to know that this aspect will be moddable to an extent!

At the risk of entering a DLC-driven improvement scheme (like Paradox games), maybe an enhanced look at submarines could be an expansion for RtW2?

Maybe here is place for or a DLC or a new game... one with focus only in submarine war, you have the production part and the strategic boxes but not the tactical part of the game... you can track individual submarines setting type of preys, and tactics but you cant control how they hunt.

Personally, I'd be completely on board for a DLC that added additional submarine functionality. It would be nice to be able to design subs like other warships, with the ability to tinker with things like number of fore and aft torpedo tubes, deck guns, light AA, maximum depth, radar, etc., as well as the ability to design additional types such as Milch cows. Towards the endgame, things like snorkels and anechoic Hull coatings could also make an appearance.

Its a good idea, and we have discussed such things among ourselves, but I cant promise anything specific yet...once we get through the launch & early updates and then we (i.e. NWS) can look at possibilities such as you suggest.
Thanks for the suggestion!
