If you can avoid paying another person ~30% by doing something yourself, I think that's a strong argument to avoid using Steam. youre half right with that statement. yes giving 30%ish your profits sucks. but if you sold another.... 5k units to someone who doesnt know the game exists? youre making way more money then.

Niche games like this are very susceptible to refunds and mixed reviews. Makes your game look like a flop. It's not hard to imagine this being a 'mixed' review game with negative reviews such as "terrible graffix" and "this game is boring and sux". Not a game that appeals to the masses, though that is fine with us.
That being said I do think going to Steam eventually would be a boon to the devs, just because of the reach it has. Get your immediate full profit sales from people who know your game, then 6 months to a year later get the Steam audience.

Specifically for Steam, incompatibility with the dev environment used for the SAI/RTW lineup will not allow the game to have full/proper linkage into the Steamworks SDK, meaning it would likely have minimal Steam feature functionality, assuming it would even be able to utilize the SteamPipe portion of the SDK (SteamPipe is the part of the SDK that uploads and places your game into the Steam environment).
pirateradar : I think it would prob work fine with itch.io if we wished to use that. Let's see if I understand correctly. They supply an import library and a DLL if I recall. A pretty common setup. Even if the *.lib won't link, which it should given that it's just an import library, it should be possible to link dynamically (LoadLibrary/GetProcAddress). If the code is in Pascal/Delphi like I think it is, that is a supported feature. Interacting with it might take some work, but not impossible. Perhaps a bit of C++ proxy code would be practical for ease of calling into the SDK. The Borland environment has an (ancient) C++ compiler bundled. What am I missing? Edit: I suppose you already found this? github.com/Relfos/steamworks_wrappersThere is a bit more to it than that, but I don't want to get too far into the inner workings of the stuff.

Hi, all..
As I have stated on other threads and posts.. our business model is not a fit with the STEAM platform, never really was to start with - and not just because of SDKs. We looked at all our options in detail and found the model we have chosen works best for our communications, logistical, technical, etc.. requirements. I am also working on a new online store platform for our NWS productions and may well move the rest of the store as well at a later date.
Thanks

To be fair i prefer dont use Steam if i have other option, i have a lot of games in Steam but more based in they are only avaliable in Steam but if i can buy in another site like devs web i prefer use this, for example i buy Slitherine/Matrix games in their shop, not in Steam. But in this situation if game is in Steam and i dont need ask permission to install game in a new PC using Steam... i prefer use Steam. Maybe new store could offer the Slitherine/Matrix "user area" instead need send an e-mail to install the game you can in this area liberate one installation and without send an e-mail generate in the web a new activation code you can use when you liberate one of the avaliable instalations. Is like have 2 serials, you only can have at same time 2 instalations using 2 serials, you link the installed game with an activation code, not related with hardware used. PD: i read your wife is not very well, expect she gets better

by 2 cents: this thread is better read as "Steam or GOG" as any gaming storefront can be used if it offers the right services (IE not just taking money for stocking the game). GOG in particular stocks a lot of games that better fit a RTW style game.

GOG is no-DRM, so include that discussion by reference. I'd speculate that the margins in the specialist wargame business don't allow for Valve's 30% off the top. Figuring that out is NWS's business not mine. Anyway I added RTW as an external game into Steam and it works fine, and my friends see my "playing Rule The Waves" on their friends list just like any native Steam program. I'll do the same with RTW2 when I get it.

The Epic Game Store has made a big splash recently, having locked up several forthcoming games with exclusivity deals. Its store has considerably less functionality than Steam's, but it does take a smaller percentage. It remains to be seen how the entry of EGS into the PC game online retail space will affect things. Epic Game Store is blatant anti-consumer garbage spyware from China, and should not be used by anyone.
Well, that's the claim from some. Not sure how much stock I put into such allegations. I find the exclusivity deals reason enough to discount the store.
