In attempts to make the cheapest carrier rebuild possible, I may have gone too far... Did the shipyard uh.... forget about the engines?

It's called "avantgarde" and it's a form of art, okay?

Arguably thats exactly what an early conversion with a bolted on flight deck could look like from above....

You just need to draw on a pop-up pilot house!

Mechanically speaking it's a fairly normal CA-to-CVL conversion, but, well... ... If one island is good, two is better, right?

Also, this made me notice something - perhaps CT armour should be adjustable? Theres historical cases for this aswell with refits (QEs for one, same with the US Standard BBs with new superstructures in WW2), and it would make sense for CV conversions like this.
Belt armor was also toyed with, as the continous shenanigans played with Hiei by the japanese proved in the interwar period when they "De-militarized" and "de-de-militarized" her later on. It should be TERRIBLY cost innefective to the point to make it unworthwhile, and should be restricted to certain extent and to a certain degree in who much you can strip (meaning if you started with a 14'' belt you can't just remove it, but thinning it to 6'' or so should be possible), but removing belt armor wasn't either an unseen nor terribly complicated to do thing.

IIRC one of the early British carriers started out with two islands--they removed the left island when it was found that pilots tended to veer left on aborts (presumably favoring the left due to torque roll from the increase in power).

I believe you're thinking of Eagle, though I think the second island was removed in the design stage rather than during construction or after commissioning.

Quite probably--I recall it being redesigned several times before commissioning in light of experience with the Argus.

You can armor KEs, so why not make a decent (and not even slow) gunboat out of that? Or maybe even a midget seaplane tender...

I've found armoured KEs are pretty useful in fighting off DDs.
Were the Tribal Class and other larger, heavy RN destroyers armoured in any way?
e: Looking at more interwar DDs I'm continuing my petition for DP 2in guns. The medium AA guns on French and Soviet DDs definitely added to their surface striking power against light forces.

Harbor or coastal patrol vessels? No destroyers that I know of had any sort of meaningful armor.

Sorry, what is a KE? I haven't seen that abbreviation before.
