35knots Air cruiser, with center line main guns at the front and a catapult flight deck at the back. Launching scout planes to detect convoys then using main guns to destroy them.

The largest possible cruiser I can to replicate the "large cruiser" or "cruiser killer" concept. Since the game classifies anything above 11" in gun caliber as a BC, that would mean having to go with 10" With late 1930s tech it should be possible to go 9x10" and 35kt speed on about 20K tons, and protection against 8" guns

Well, since you ask... Also, did someone say "IJN BB->CV conversions"? I really don't want to ask. Nine triple turrets, Jeremy? Nine? This is insane.

Interestingly enough, from the fleet exercises that i've run in the Beta, my CVL's have actually consistently outperformed their larger cousins (couldn't resist editing my savegame). I'm looking forward to fine-tuning the most efficient and effective light carrier fleet possible. I suspect that’s because the game hasn’t taken into account the tech progress of airplanes. Earlier the devs say that as airplanes progress in technology and year, carrier capacity reduces. So while a small carrier is more efficient is for planes that make the Swordfish look modern, a large carrier will be more efficient for large, powerful piston planes and jets.

I would like to try to build some historical designs - depending on the nation. For starters I tried to build Nagato, based on information from Wikipedia (= no extensive research went into this one) and so far my conclusion is that it can not be done with the 1920 tech available to Japan in the demo (take in account that Nagato is 1917 design).
In particular I tried: weaponry: 4x2x16in, 20x1x6in in casemates (140mm in real life), 4x1x3in DP
Armor - all or nothing: 12in belt, 6in deck, 18in / 6 in turrets, 3in seconderies level 2 torpedo protection
Other features: 0 sea planes some light AA guns 25 knots 40.000 tons Oil fired, normal engines, medium range Normal crew conditions
The resulting design would require a lot more than 40k tons. I have not tried to find out how much, but I would say that at least 8k more.
Edit: a question: what is the displacement we see in the game? Should it be equivalent of standard displacement? Edit2: the displacement of 40k tons and 18in turret faces should correspond to the final design of the ship. Initially it was 32 thousand ton ship and the turrets had lighter armor.

wew, thats a lot of forward firing guns. Usually my BC's and BB's are only six forward firing guns, with a total between 9-12 Yeah, realized something that now bugs me. If you put all turrets forward secondary turrets are placed towards the rear of the ship, which is nice, however if you place any wing turrets they instantly move the secondaries to the middle. Would be nice if D and E turrets were considered front turrets for the purposes of secondary placement since they certainly are fowards enough to warrant placing the secondaries further back.

I'm a simple man. I'd like the ability to designate light cruisers into various preferred roles, such as destroyer leader, fleet scout, screen and raider. Possibly add in radar vessel in there, although IIRC those were generally destroyers which were available more readily.
Having some small measure of control over how one of the most numerous ship class in the game is deployed would add a lot of depth, IMO.

Oh yeah, that's why I meant 'some' control. Obviously any ship will have to fill any role given circumstances of availability and war, but even if it just weighted the odds one way or the other I'd be a big fan of it.

Has anyone worked out what effect the trade protection role has on what battles/formations a ship shows up in?

I want to build a habakkuk-esque carrier, as big as possible and sacrificing EVERYTHING for more planes. I think it would be kind of fun/horrifying.
