Can your frontline forces draw on them to replace losses, or what?

As far as I gathered they are just off map container. Mostly useful if your airbases are very full and you want to transfer squardons around.

As nearly as I can tell, the Reserve has two main uses: - Building up air group experience prior to being able to deploy the air group to its "permanent" station (a carrier or airbase). Reserve squadrons will get to at least Fair, though I don't know if they'll go any higher.
- Manual force rotation to keep relatively high levels of air group experience in front line units while allowing depleted units to recover experience in relative safety.
I do not believe that the game treats the Reserve as a pool of experienced pilots upon which depleted air groups can draw for automatic replenishment, though I am not certain.

One important thing that the Reserve list is useful for: according to the manual that came with the demo, when a CV is taken in for rebuilding, their whole air wing is disbanded (meaning that their experience is lost!). Assuming that all of your other CVs or airbases are already full to capacity, you can move your CV's squadrons to reserve *before* sending her in for rebuilding. I don't know if this will be made automatic in a later patch or on release (since it seems like such an obvious thing that would always be done), but that's the case ATM according to the manual (I haven't tested it in-game yet).

i can confirm your aircraft can train up in reserve - i created all my CVL fighter sqns right directly in reserve at game start and Nov 1922 they all have 'good' experience

WHY Rushed product, there are many things that can be improved in the game based on the state we have seen in the demo.
