Because if it happens to me, it happens to you guys too, and I know we're not all a hundred thousand hours into the game. Only the developers (or people that crack the game) know the exact coding, but this is my current diagnostic of the issue.
SO I KEEP GETTING LIST ERRORS?
So you have a lot of list errors in battle? Don't panic. List errors are the game saying something isn't nesting right. It happens. What it means is, normally, two divisions tried to create a core tie on one division, and the computer choked on it's beer. One of the divisions therefore stayed core to the original division (which is AFAIK the lower numbered division) and the other switches to AI Independent. What's important to note is this bug is a fundamental bug of Steam and Iron, the bedrock software of the battle interface. This is a pre-existing bug, and may not be going away.
BUT WHY DOES IT HAPPEN MORE?
So, Rule the Waves 2 includes always-AI controlled ally ships, which are much more dependent on the hierarchy system this bug traces from. What happens is the pre-battle setup sets the chains of command, and then adds in the ally AI ships, which are tied in at points to the structure. After they tie into your string, though, the list error fixer prioritizes them so that they don't get separated, and therefore a chunk of your fleet is now dangling free to the wind.
HOW DO I FIX THIS?
What you do is pretty simple. You find the division that snapped to independent through your Order of Battle tab on the left of the screen, and then open the "Status" option on a left-click of the division. Do not click the ships; this problem is over their pay grade. In the division interface, you can set the Lead Division to the allied ships that cause the seperation for a quick fix. For a more "historically accurate" repair, set the Independent division back to Core, then go to the allied ships and reset them to the last ship in the capitol ship line's string of Core ships.
HOW DO I PREVENT THIS?
Don't have allies, really. The game's good at not doing this to itself, and not many people muck around in the ToE/OoB tab which is how you manually cause the issue. Again, this is a bug that is in large part pre-existing. It happens in RTW1, it happens in S&I, and it probably still happens in the expansion packs. You just have to know how to fix it.
