Note: this is my first public mod for any game so please bear with me.
This mod is intended to increase the variety and number of aircraft names and manufacturers in RtW2. I hope this allow for a greater variety of aircraft than previously seen. In most cases I've been able to double the number of manufacturers and (if applicable) aircraft models available to the game to choose from. In particular I've wished to expand the number of WW1 manufacturers the game has to choose from. Other times I've simply tried to expand them for more variety. More details below:
I've done a little testing and have noticed no ill effects, but I'll be eager for feedback from others.
Installation:
1. In the RuletheWaves2 "data" file, copy the following files:
"Austria-HungaryShipNames.dat"
"FranceShipNames.dat"
"GermanyShipNames.dat"
"Great BritainShipNames.dat"
"ItalyShipNames.dat"
"JapanShipNames.dat"
"RussiaShipNames.dat"
"USAShipNames.dat"
Put them in a separate folder somewhere else on your computer. If something goes wrong or I find out that changing a few lines of text causes irrevocable damage to your RTW2 game and/or computer, you'll want these on hand to return your game to its original state. I've not had any problems, but better safe than sorry.
2. From the attached .rar file on this post, copy and paste the complete set of .dat files from "RTW2 Expanded Aircraft mod" into the "data" file. Overwrite the old versions.
3. Fire RTW2 up and enjoy. You'll know you're on the right track when some peculiar names start appearing in your lists of prototypes!
Feedback is encouraged and more than welcome! Feel free to add your own as the process is quite simple and self-explanatory. This is my first attempt at a public mod for any game so please forgive mistakes and I take no responsibility for anything that may happen to your computer. Not knowing anything surely means a lack of responsibility!
Notes:
So, now that my game has been activated, I've been enjoying it a great deal!
However: one little pet peeve of mine has been the aircraft naming schemes. I seem to remember a thread where names were being suggested, but it feels to me that the lists, even for bigger nations, are somewhat small. For the aircraft which just get a number beside their name it's okay, but for nations like the US and UK, it feels very wrong to be building a Hawker Spitfire as your first built in 1916, and then replacing it with a Supermarine Hurricane! Particularly when the first test I did with aircraft also yielded a Spitfire. So - as the old saying goes, if you want something done properly, you've got to do it yourself!
My work has consisted of going down the shipnames lists and adding manufacturers and (in some cases) aircraft names. In most cases I've been able to double the number of names in both sets - potentially triple in the case of the US (if there's a word, it's been added to a US aircraft at some point, possibly twice).
There's been a very broad methodology behind this. I've gone through with the assumption that we're in total alternate history territory from the word go. Therefore manufacturers that might've only ever built one prototype get an entry for the sake of variety (and states like Japan really need all the help they can get there!). Who knows, their designs might take off in this alternative world. In some instances (notably with the Brits and Germans) I've brought in a lot of WW1 aircraft manufacturers. It might make little sense for them to be producing in 1940, but so on the other hand is Supermarine producing in 1915! So, pending the ability to fix manufacturers to a certain date, I'm going to put more in rather than less.
Certain aviation buffs will note the designations for certain aircraft, in particular for certain WW1 German makers. Those are pretty much ahistorical, but it'd be impossible for me to make them right because the model designations were tied to the aircraft's role (An Albatros D.V is a fighter, whilst an Albatros C.III from pretty much the same period is a reconnaissance aircraft). As such the designations under such circumstances are in large part invented (generally derived from their beginning of their names).
Certain other ahistorical things have crept in. I've added a large set of Russian pre-revolutionary manufacturers, on the assumption that they'd be operating for a while if no revolution took place (notably Sikorsky). Similarly, the rather small Austria-Hungary list has been bulked up by Czech, Hungarian and Yugoslavian manufacturers, on the assumption that they'd operate with whomever was in power.
Going forward, I hope to add more names. If in time there's more detail in naming conventions (doubtful at present but you never know), I'd be eager to see different names applied to different types, etc, we shall see. One avenue for expansion, particularly for the purists out there, would be to have multiple entries for certain of the more prolific manufacturers. I suspect that would make a significant difference to their occurrence in game, but I'm generally ignorant of this computing thing, so go figure.
A few caveats:
A number of the lists are untested - this is due to there being a separate 1920 list for a number of nations (and Austria-Hungary not existing!), and I simply don't have enough time to play through 15 years of a game to check each one. Every one I have tested (the US & UK starts for example) have worked without problems. I've not encountered performance declines beyond the normal (rather longer) set up time in RTW2's 1920 start date on my aging laptop.
My knowledge of Japanese types is small and therefore whilst I've added to the manufacturers, I've not added to the names, since its an uphill climb finding them and since I'm generally ignorant of their naming schemes (and Japanese in general), I don't want to put my foot in it by adding names that make no sense to those in the know.
Certain manufacturers will raise a few eyebrows (the inclusion of Soviet helicopter manufacturers in particular!). My reasoning is that the designers were at some point alive and active sometime prior to 1950, and in this alternative history we have, who's to say they wouldn't have built fixed wing aircraft if a few things had gone differently. They're included for variety's sake.
Fundamentally, this is intended to add more variety to names and games. It verges out of history a little bit - but the moment we open up the game I reason we do that anyway.
I'm not sure if there's some limit to names/types. The game can be temperamental, only selecting original types one moment, then all new ones the next. I hope others can chime in on this.
Enjoy!
