Got a battle in the caribean where I have lots of all types of ships. according to pre battle msg I will meet 2 AMC, so I enter the battle. My side have one DD so I thinking, well its winnable against thre AMCs. But to my suprise i see a French BC. Wow, is it a pregame setting or something. Now I could have tested my BBs, but no.

Intelligence isn’t always accurate

On very rare occasions, intelligence may not be entirely wrong.
Keep playing for long enough and you may eventually get a pre-battle report that actually matches what you see in battle.

IRL yes. But in game Im in blank. The turn after I lost 20 vp because of the enemy dominate the area. Is thats why I never got my big ships involved in a battle, the game cant see them.

There’s a few things to look out for that can give you a general idea of what you’ll fight. For one the battle size. A small battle will have probably some escorts or destroyers on both sides. A medium would be two or three heavy cruisers and maybe a couple light cruisers for either participant, and a large battle is likely a fleet engagement that will include any if not all capital ships in the area.
Another thing is type of battles. Convoy engagements generally (but not always) consist of light cruisers and destroyers on the defending force, maybe up to a heavy cruiser attacking. Fleet battles usually include battleships and their task forces, resulting in a larger battle. Coastal raids will generally be heavy cruisers or battleships, but usually a small squadron, I.E. a battleship and her escorts.
I pretty much always ignore what the game says the ships in the battle will be, and use battle size and type as indicators of what I can expect to have, and what I can expect my enemy to have. Size and type don’t lie.
