If you want to improve turret and deck armor as well as the AAA, how about REDUCING the speed by 1 knot to free up tonnage? So basically Variant B with 28kn and as much turret armor as you can get... IMHO changing main guns is way too expensive for what you get in return.

IMHO changing main guns is way too expensive for what you get in return. I have choosen VARIANT A. But your point is good one and I used it for more modern battlecruisers with original speed 30 knots. I was able decrease speed to 29 knots which save a lot of money for engines and use that tonnage to increase deck armour from 3.5" to 4.5" Right now in 1945 all ships are still usefull as they are used as scout or carrier escort and for that purpose new ships would be waste of money.
So I have right now 6 battlecruisers which are not modern (most than 20 years old) but they are doing quite fine. I have even tried to build 55000 tons battleship but I was not impressed with them and find that older 35000-40000 tons battleships are better as they are much cheaper and they can do same thing as the half larger new ships. The reason is that there is so much random that even my 55000 tons battleships needed to escape from 40000 tons battleship because getting first 10 hits. But it is true that 35000 tons battleship would not escape punishment of 21 shells of 15 and 16" guns and 2 heavy bombs. They would probably survive this punisment but as wreck waiting to be sunk.

The best way to build a nice BC is to put an Imperial Eagle in the bow; it'll look awesome and it'll feel awesome, at least until you get torp'd at random from 3000 nautical miles away or, even better, by your own DDs. I got the idea trying to recreate the Bismark with the bow swastika included, using the asymmetric structure, but it looked more like a squashed spider than anything else. I also didn't like too much the idea of sailing around with a swastika for the rest of my playthrough, so I settled down on an iron cross. In any case, I love the way it looks. I'm probably adding it to all future capital ships. Attachments:
