I have researched "early surface search radar." However, I do not see where to install it. Does it get installed automatically?

It will be installed every turn automatically. You can also right click on a ship and select 'Radar' to see options to manually assign some of the sets you get for manual assignment. Unfortunately in my experience you don't get many of these, and often only after that tech has been around for a few months, so you're at the mercy of the RNG until then. It seems to prioritize capitals/carriers over cruisers over destroyers.

Disregard.
For those that need to know it does get installed automatically. When you right click on a ship in the "Ships in service" screen you can check and do what is needed if you don't like it.

The highest "production" rate observed so far is about 7-8 radar sets per month, so within a year or so all your capital ships will be equipped with this. Upgrades are also carried out automatically. Note also that KEs don't get equipped, but you can do this by hand with "surplus" sets. As I have observed, it doesn't increase maintenance costs, so it's certainly a nice addition to these.

Yeah don’t bother manually adding since it counts as a turn of refit and thus increased maintenance, just let it happen automatically(since the game prioritises larger ships anyways)
