I've only had a few battles so far where my CVLs have been able to get involved but every time a mission starts they launch their entire complement of torpedo bombers as recon while my cruisers run into the enemy battleline within 5 or so turns. The AI launches the recon at max range and I've been unable to call them back or preempt their launch even by trying to ready them for a torpedo strike. Am I just setting them up wrong? Any tips on not waiting hours watching my CAs get mauled by BBs while I wait for my bombers to return?

at the very start of the battle before the clock starts you can stop it manually - on the right hand side of the buttons where you control air actions click on the button just to the left of the lightening bolt (i believe it's got a sprocket in it)
you can turn off air recon with the checkbox on the bottom

Ah I see now I didn't realize you could reconfigure to do recon manually so I was trying to leave the auto recon on and just stop a handful of the bombers.

manual says - The game will generally assign one plane to every 20 degree segment that needs to be searched - so if you limit your search pie you can send up a limited recon and save the rest of the sqn for a strike
