As the French, I won a war against Italy and was awarded 10 points towards a Colony. That's the highest I've gotten. Played 4 full campaigns. Got this a couple times, but mostly I've only been awarded 4, or 6 and sometimes 8. Just curious to know what you all have been getting.

10 points is the highest you can get unless (in the case of?) collapsing the enemy into revolution

I managed to get 10 without collapsing an enemy into revolution, but I've not seen more than 10 even with doing that.

12 from the Italians, so I took Sicily even though it would have been more sensible to add the points to the economy. A Russian Revolution in the same game only yielded 10 points and an armoured cruiser.

And how much is a point worth to your economy, does it scale the more points you get or is it cumulative, and for how long do you get it?

I got 12 the other day and took the Baltic States from Russia. If I remember correctly I had pretty much destroyed their fleet with basically no losses, but I didn't cause a revolution. There's some element of randomness as to how many you get but I don't know enough to say much about it.

I got 20 in demo and it is confirmed as maximum which should be very rare.

So you'll never be able to take India or South Africa in a stock game?

No revolution, had one against Russia later but the Italians just seemed intent on turning down peace offers for ever and then of a sudden surrendered hard. I am not sure how much points are worth to the economy, I really need to play a game and keep track.

So you'll never be able to take India or South Africa in a stock game? They're greyed out as invasion targets so I think that's the developers intent.

I got 12 once or twice, without revolution. It seems the posession points are just RNG result, they have nothing to do with the losses of the enemy, the relation of power or anything else you can affect. Only a revolution guarantees higher points.

As France, I beat Russia in two consecutive wars - the first was a complete breakdown which turned the nation to communism, for that I was awarded 10 points and I took the Baltic States. The second was a negotiated treaty where they were pressed hard and once again I earned 10 points, and so I nabbed Finland as well...
I have never replicated such successful treaties (not for lack of trying though!) and the most common number I see appears to be 6 without fully collapsing the enemy nation.
