So, my computer recently decided to stop working, and cost has prevented me from simply getting a replacement machine with windows. Hence, I'm on linux for now.
My question is; is the game linux compatible? My guess is the answer is "no, its for windows" so I'd like to further ask the playerbase, does the game work with WINE?

I run RTW1/2 in a VM, so I haven't tested it with Wine, but according to WineHQ's AppDB, RTW1 worked well on Wine 1.7. (Current around 2015), so it's worth a try.

sounds complicated for someone as dumb with linux as me; I do however still have a very old vista laptop that prob could run the game.

Wine doesn't take too much in the way of Linux-specific knowledge. If you're good enough with computers to install Linux, Wine shouldn't give you too much trouble.

I can confirm RTW2 works great under Wine on Mac OSX. On the latest version, I've noticed that very rarely a pop up window will only show the titlebar, but that is easily resolved by closing the bar and reopening the window.

Same here with wine on OS X--I've had occasional focus bugs (can't select anything in a popup, or no window can be selected) resolved by pressing ESC and/or closing and reopening the popup, but otherwise I don't think it has been less stable than on my Windows machine.

I know it has been months, but I thought I would update as this is a question others might ask/google and having it 'already answered' would be good.
I'm on Mint 19.1 and am in the process of testing two things.
1 - The RtW2 demo; which has installed fine, and opens fine.
and
2 - To see if the copy of RtW1 that I bought earlier (and saved a copy of the download file in case what happened to me, happened to me [computer died]) works.
I've learned that Mint 19.1 comes with some version of wine either pre-installed, or, installing it was so easy that I forgot that I've done it. If the latter, it was as simple as looking up wine in my software manager and clicking download. Once that is done, exe files automatically open using wine. Just click it like you used to do on windows, and pouf, it works.
Once I've completed these test, I'll post here, but am posting here now to ask: would it be advisable/reasonable to talk to the devs about linux and, specifically with the aim of setting a series of targets through which we could confirm that the game works on linux, through wine

I've been running the game on Ubuntu 18.04 using wine since release. Game runs just fine with the only issues being pop up windows not having priority and being unable to load ship designs in the editor.

I can load ships; but I need to change the file type to all to do so. The one problem I have been having is that the top bar of the menu (the one that says "type" "name" "class" etc) sometimes glitches out, and I need to change the tab to get it back.
