I am playing a Japan 1900 game, v. 1.03 Very Large Fleet size, Historical Resources (though this game was created in 1.00 when the option was bugged), Manual Build Legacy Fleet, Admiral's Mode. It is currently 1938. I am playing an invasion defence scenario, with the Russians trying to invade my possession of Tsingtau. The scenario had a length of 1400 minutes, and began at dawn. After the night fell, I maneuvered my Carrier Force, only to find that its AI divisions would often switch to Independent. I would manually set my carriers to core forces and attach various screening forces, then a couple of in-game minutes later, the divisions in the Carrier Force would all switch to Independent. After I lost control of the divisions, the divisions seemed to attempt to enter port at Tsingtau. Even after switching the divisions back to Core/Screen, they did not follow my Carrier Force flagship. Only after the divisions attempted to enter port at Tsingtau and I told the game that I didn't want them to did my divisions begin to follow my Carrier Force flagship.
A similar issue happened near the dawn of the second day with my Main Force. About forty minutes before dawn, my Main Force sighted the enemy battle line, and all of my Main Force's AI divisions switched to Independent. Even after switching them back to Core/Screening, my Core battlecruiser force made a beeline for Tsingtau, and only began following my Main Force flagship after it attempted to enter port at Tsingtau.
The issue is not one of attaching too many core divisions to one lead division; I made sure of that. In addition, one of my fleet carriers detached from my division in the middle of the night and under AI control, entered port at Tsingtau.
If I had to venture a guess, the AI divisions were attempting to enter Tsingtau at night, even though that was stupid, as it made them dive right into the guns of the Russian battleships.
