With carriers following a battleship (flagship), when the carrier is ordered to launch planes it turns into the wind (OK). If the carrier stays in sight of the flagship it will return to its original course and heading when done (OK). But if the carrier leaves sight of the flagship when launching planes the AI takes over and can issue completely new orders, for example to sail in a different direction (Bad).
The carrier AI should [in case of losing contact to launch planes] turn back to the original course and perhaps increase speed to rejoin the fleet.

I almost never command carriers divisions directly and they turn into wind and get back to course quite regurarly.

Rear Admiral mode (default). Imagine: Battleships (flagship) are headed due south at 16 knots Visibility 10 miles Carriers are 5 miles to north, headed due south at 16 knots as commanded by player (holding station on flagship) Wind from NE > Carriers turn into wind (045) to launch CAP This takes the carriers 2 miles north east relative to the flagship, then they automatically come back to the original due south heading, still with the division commanded by the player
But if the carriers were further away.... As above except Carriers are 9 miles to north > Carriers turn into wind (045) to launch CAP This takes the carriers 2 miles north east relative to the flagship, outside of visibility from the flagship. Carrier division becomes AI controlled as beyond the 10 mile visibility limit AI decides best course is to head West Player has to turn flagship around to head North at speed to close back in on the carriers
I propose that in this case the AI should remember the original orders and head due south at high speed after launching CAP so that the carriers return to their original station 9 miles behind the flagship.
