That is an excellent question. kartaugh gets the deer-stalker hat award for today. Since I am sure merchants are not perpetual, i.e. they are created fresh for scenarios as needed, I might guess... i have no clue. My (probably wrong) guess would be that "Merchant 8" had been generated 4 times so far in various missions(probably without being sunk), and thus the game probably thought a ship named "Merchant 8" had participated in 4 battles, ignoring the fact that "Merchant 8" is probably not the same ship. --> This lead me to think what if you have that one legendary merchant man who was present in like 20 raids and survives everyone one of them...... I am sure this merchant skipper was so annoyed with the mediocre performance of his nations fleet that he got some additional steel plates for his freighter, mounted a gun he found cheaply at ebay, and went to war as a privateer. 4 Stars = 4 enemy merchs boarded by yelling crew members... Of course this is highly illegal, therefore it is not listed in the official reports the player gets.
