When I get to the late game (1945+) if I have the spare finds I build a couple small BCs to act has counter raiders that look a lot like the Alasaka class, excellent at killing raiders but far to costly for my tastes when playing the small nations. I have been fighting a lot of these pocket BCs in my current game and my take away is they are more of a liability then asset in cruiser battles. Several of my battles have pit my full size BCs against these mini BCs with predictable results.

As an experiment, since my budget as 1940s Japan was well I'm excess of my needs, I built a two-ship class of cruiser killers (basically slightly scaled-down Alaskas). I didn't expect much of them, but they've actually given great service, particularly on one occasion when one of them ran in amongst an enemy carrier battle group and just slaughtered it. I definitely recommend such ships.

I guess the thing I hate most about such special ships (including AA CLs and DDs) is, that they get lumped together in divisions with standard ships of their class.

I totally agree. I like to build specialized ships fairly similar to historical vessels in my games, and the way in which ships are assigned to divisions often causes problems. Hopefully this will be improved once the bug-stomping process is mostly done.
