I just researched small seaplane carriers. I haven't really bothered with seaplane carriers up until now but I decided I'd give them a go. However, when I go to design a "small" seaplane carrier, it keeps telling me I haven't researched "large" seaplane carriers yet. So I tried lowering the tonnage. I kept lowering it and getting the same message about not having researched "large" seaplane carriers all the way down to 200 tons. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there a trick to it I'm not aware of?
Thanks for any assistance!

It's number of aircraft. I think 5 is max for small?

Ah! I knew I was missing something obvious! Thanks!

It really means that one can design a ship (CL, CA, B, BC or BB) with a seaplane or two. The tech "large seaplane carriers" is the one that unlocks AVs.

The first tech, "Seaplane carrier" allows for up to 5 aircraft and up to 5000tons on an AV. The second tech, "Improved seaplane carrier" removes these restrictions.
You don't actually need either tech to mount floatplanes on non-AV ships. This might be unintentional.

Probably, since you can mount floatplanes on ships in 1899.

I stand corrected. Everytime I tried to build a 5 ship AV it reclassified as a CL and any more and I ran in the large AV block. It may be an armour/displacement thing. I'll see if I can work it out.
