I've just had a battle in which I had one carrier division, which was assigned to support various battle divisions during the course of the engagement. CAP was set to maximum while an enemy air attack took place. During this attack, there were 30 aircraft circling over the carriers, which were not attacked (not waiting to land as far as I know, as they had plenty of fuel left) and none over the main fleet, which was attacked. Later, a single section of a single fighter took off and moved to guard the battleships, and engaged one of the attacking sections, damaging an aircraft; eight more then took off and joined, and engaged the last wave of attackers.
The carriers were, as far as I know, within visual range of the battleships throughout most or all of the engagement. The weather was partly cloudy, in daylight. The only explanation I can think of for the failure to support the battleships is that I changed the target division on a few occasions, including the first turn of the battle. However, at no point did the carriers send anything like half of the fighters which were airborne; at best, one section was over the battleships while two to four were over the carriers. Can anybody explain all of this to me?
