Can't recreate HMS Formidable (67) without it being almost twice the tonnage. The armor for flight deck and hangar tip it way over the scales. I tried making some other armored carriers after reading THIS really cool article on why the Brits armored their carriers and the USA did not, which no one probably does anyway, and found they too require nearly twice the tonnage of the historical design. So my conclusion is carrier armor is too heavy!

Be aware that the game's displacement is not necessarily standard displacement.
Also, what air group are you assuming, how much deck armor and torpedo protection are you putting on the design, how are you rounding the QF 4.5" main battery to an in-game caliber, and what range/engine priority/accommodations/freeboard/belt extent choices are you making? Because this: looks to me like a reasonable approximation of HMS Formidable as described on Wikipedia, and it's something I can create in 1936 in an Italian game I have with the tech levels shown, which puts it roughly in the right time frame for the historical ship.

You missed a few things. I looked at the Formidable construction and layout very closely and my weight is way over yours when I do my approximation.

You missed a few things. I looked at the Formidable construction and layout very closely and my weight is way over yours when I do my approximation. What key features are missing which make that ~25,000t approximation based off Wikipedia's article unacceptable to you? Neither a flight deck catapult (unavailable with that particular save state's technologies) nor a more reasonable 150-200 rounds per gun for the 4" main battery would add that much tonnage, and if you wanted a 2.5" to 3" hangar-level armor deck that'd only increase the design displacement to around 30,000-31,000 tons using that save's technology state - only about 1,000 to 2,000 tons more than the ~29,000 tons a quick Google search indicates for the full load displacement, and far short of the 40,000+ tons you seem to be claiming when you say that you cannot reproduce Formidable within the game on less than about twice the historical displacement.

Be aware that the game's displacement is not necessarily standard displacement. Based on a build I did of Iowa, it seems to be full-load.
