Very intersting design Axe. Out of curiosity, have you tried sacrificing 1-2kn in order to give the ship long range? In my experience long ranged ships are more efficient as raiders (less interceptions, less scuttling or internment) so that I tend to give all my true allround cruiser long range I definitely like long-range ships for raiding, but this was a British playthrough, and they've got a port in (I think) every sea zone, so in this particular case it wouldn't have brought a heap of benefit (these ships were for trade defence more than trade offence). Definitely agree it's something to be considered for most other nations (France'd be the only other nation where I'd probably rely on bases as well). I'm not sure I'd be reluctant to sacrifice speed though, as it's important the ship is fast in case it bumps into something of a similar speed (and by 1921 there are usually 28kt and sometimes 29kt BCs floating around). I'm guessing I didn't have improved triple (or quadruple) turrets for this design (as I'd usually go A B Y triple rather than A B X Y double if I had the choice), so if I wanted to squeeze long range at the same displacement in I'd probably reduced main armament (drop X) and if there was any weight left over from that, increase the secondary battery to 5" to give it a bit more weight against CLs and CA secondaries. It would make CA on CA battles a bit hairy though, and I suspect I'd just increase displacement and range together for the same capability (I tend to err on the side of quality ships, although it's danged expensive and makes avoiding blockades a dash trickier early in a war).

Inspired by cwemyss's post on page 10 of this thread I'm going to post the Battleships I have in service at this point in a Germany game I am currently running. it is 1938 and I am at war with Great Britain for context. Prior to this war I had spent my time beating up the French, Italians, and Russians for colonies and lunch money.

Feels kinda like your own Jane's or Brassey's page there. I made something a bit similar for an Ottoman game I'm playing. Like this:

Yours of course has much more detail, I just hacked mine out in paint over 5 hours or so

On an unrelated note does anyone know where I might be able at access an online copy of Jane's 1903? I have had no luck including my campus library, and their official website doesn't seem to even have a paid version, tho I would think the 1903 would be public domain by now, even under the inscrutable copyright laws most countries have.

Yours of course has much more detail, I just hacked mine out in paint over 5 hours or so Yeah, but you're using actual ship side views you made. I just ripped off the Japanese fleet (in more ways than one, most of those ships are copies of Japanese ships statswise as well as appearancewise).

Welp as long as the end result looks and works fine it is all in the name of fun.

The Haruna-class ships, Haruna and Mimasaka, were perhaps the most powerful and best-protected battlecruisers when commissioned in 1913, the first oil-fired capital ships of the IJN, and the first to use a superfiring arrangement of the main guns. They racked up an impressive string of victories; in 1914, while Mimasaka was in the yard after surviving striking a mine, Haruna was confronted by three Russian battlecruisers and managed to sink one immediately. She crippled the others, only withdrawing after a critical hit that destroyed her forward turret. Later that year, she fought at the Battle of Japan, alongside the older battlecruiser Kongo and dreadnoughts Suwo and Asahi. The Japanese, outnumbered nearly 2 to 1, sank five Russian battleships and nearly sank a sixth, losing only the Asahi to a torpedo hit. In 1915 at the Battle of Ulsan, they sank the battlecruiser Ochakov and crippled the Navarin, but, low on ammunition, were driven off by the arrival of Russian dreadnoughts. They were modernized in 1921, and in 1923 sank the German battlecruisers Derfflinger and Moltke, Mimasaka surviving being torpedoed by a German submarine.

This class won 3 wars for me (One vs. France, and twice vs. Austria-Hungary) Built in 1908, now 1922. Will need to decide if I will upgrade the design (Most likely replace the machinery, put the turrets on a center line, and drop the 3 inchers) or do a fresh build.

That's a nice, well balanced design. My biggest concern with upgrading her would be 2 inches of deck armor, which you can't upgrade in-game, is going to get pretty thin in the mid 1920's when everybody has 14 inch guns and above. By 1922, every caliber from 11 inches and up has a chance of penetrating 2 inches of deck armor at the right range if they have kept their AP tech level up to date. Can you move large caliber wing turrets to the centerline? I've never tried it. I would think you couldn't since the entire ship is designed around the locations of the barbette holes but maybe that's something that's allowed in-game.

Apparently you can't move them to center line, but I can update them with elevation and cross deck fire. Luckily for the combat that she was in, I chose to close range as soon as I could to get away from the plunging fire. Might be best to spend the money on a updated design.

Yeah, 8 inches of belt armor is also vulnerable by 1922. Any 8 inch or above gun within 8,000 yards and 11 inch and above guns inside of 15,000 yards can penetrate 8 inches of belt armor. Combine that with the 11 inch guns ability to penetrate deck armor from 15,000 yards and out and she risks no longer having an immunity zone against 11 inch or greater guns. It still looks like a useful ship as long as you keep it away from battleships and more modern battlecruisers. It might be expensive, especially for a smaller nation like Italy but maybe she could be a useful raider hunter if you have an overseas territory (In Western Africa or the Indian Ocean for example) to protect. Depends on what the speed of the light cruisers (likely commerce raiders) are now and how many of your likely opponents are still using their older cruisers that are 26 knots or less in speed.

I was able to keep the peace for the rest of the game so they never faced a challenge after 1921. First two battles where vs. the french in the 1914 conflict. In that era their speed was key to really giving the french a hard time. In the 1919-1920 conflict with the Austrians, the two battles was a convoy attack (where the escorts fled with two of the class seaming towards them with DD escort.) and the key battle of the campaign where all three BC was able to catch the Austrians doing a shore bomb bombardment at night and was able to gut a Austrian BC and 5 CLs for a huge victory. If I had kept playing I would have done a major upgrade program that including upgrading the machinery, dropping the small guns, and getting their speed at about 29-30 knots. But since I am learning the game I am going to start a new game and play Italy or Japan...

Playing with the South American mod as Chile. Presidente asked me to make two battleships. Whatever Presidente wants! note that it says "old" but this design is brand new. Also it doesn't mention that this is short range, low freeboard and cramped. I am proud of this design for three reasons: 1) I made a battleship in 8000 tons. 8000. 2) I can afford two of these for 55 million 3) I am reasonably confident that it has enough 4 inch guns that it might conceivably survive a fight with a destroyer. XD
