A suggestion about doctrine and training. When you get surface and air search radar then and the subsequent air intercept function or CIC function, you should have a click box in doctrine and training under various for air intercept training. Having worked in NORAD, let me tell you that it takes training to perform that function. The scope dopes, fighters, ECM operators, CIC Watch Officers, radio specialist, the whole gang has to work together to attain proficiency. I watched them do this on a weekly basis, sometimes more with missions. Missions using friendly aircraft can put the whole network apparatus together and find the flaws. It is very important, not just for fleets, but air base complexes.

I can see it being a WHOLE lot more useful in the Mediterranean than places like the Pacific... unless it was on a carrier. There are just so many air bases in that sea that planes are more like stirring up a hornets nest and you need to be able to see them to swat them. So training sounds like a good idea. Course, there will be someone with exactly opposite my opinion in about 5 hours...

Well, I can point out that Pearl Harbor had installed radars and had a rudimentary air intercept building but it was only temporary until it was finalized. Guadalcanal had a similar function. Midway had one. The issue is this and it isn't just the Pacific. Once you build a base, you have to have it supported and alerted by a radar network with an air operations center for detecting, identifying incoming enemy aircraft and to be able to launch the alert fighters. I am not disagreeing with you, in Mediterranean the distances north and south were very short, so early detection was vital.

Another suggestion: Once air surveillance radar and surface search radar have been developed, we need to be able to install the air surveillance radars on air bases to protect them. Surface search isn't as important but air surveillance is absolutely vital. Maybe it can be done now, but I have ship board radar and I can install it on the air bases.
