Been playing for a couple weeks ... relative newbie. Gotten to about 1920 ... utterly decimated Russia, Japan, and US as Germany. I say that just to indicate I've been playing and have had some success.
I have 3 current issues that are holding me back that I can't figure out ...
1) "Dual Purpose" guns on destroyers ... I can't build any new destroyers ... I get a message (in auto design too) that Dual purpose mounts haven't been researched for that calibre, etc. I change calibres, mess around a bit, nothing changes. The "DP" box is checked by Main Armament but is greyed out and I can't uncheck it. This has been going on for about 3 years of game time and my destroyers are now hopelessly obsolete.
2) Carriers and related development of carrier aircraft ... I finished research that says I am allowed to make CVL's, but when I try to design I'm not allowed w/ the message "haven't researched CVL's" (MOL). So, that's one aspect ... another is that there was a message saying that further development in heavier than air aircraft (torpedo bombers) would require that I have a carrier (for testing). So,, now my aircraft development is falling behind. This too has been going on for about 3 years.
I did a search here and see no obvious thread(s) on this problem but it can't be just me. What have I done and/or what do I need to do to get past these impediments?

I'm not sure which techs you have exactly but: 1. You need to have a special tech in order to use DP mounts as main armament on DD and KE, that tech is in light forces category and (usually) appears a lot later (definitely later than 1920). If you need larger destroyers, build them without DP battery, there's no point waiting for it. 2. Which exactly CVL tech do you have? Purpose built CVL or CVL conversion? Usually you start out with conversion techs (first for CVL then CV). If you want a converted CVL you need to rebuild an existing ship into a CVL, otherwise you need to wait for the purpose built CVL tech.
If I recall correctly you dont need carriers for further advancement in tech. Carriers are necessary if you want to up the priority on shipboard aircraft operations (if I remember right).

(1)is an old bug with auto-design. For some reason, it is not checking which technologies you have before making a design. You will often see AI ships with technology that is not actually available at the time, usually some form of AA or the afore-mentioned DP guns.
In this case, you will have to manually design the destroyer so as not to get lumbered with the DP guns.
As for (2), I think janxol is correct. You have the CVL conversion tech not the CVL construction tech.

Have you updated to 1.12? Apparently the initial installer is still at 1.0.

to make the CVL conversion you have to take an old ship remove the guns, add a flight deck, add some planes, then hit the check mark and it will ask to convert to a cvl. There may be a quicker easier way but this is the method i use

Greetings from a fellow newbee (and 1st post, weee ) Addendum to wlbjork 's post. Instead of designing a new DD from scratch, what you can also do is right-click on one of your existing DDs in the "ships in service" screen, choose "open design" and go from there. This also saves time and money on developing the design (the time/money spend on "finalizing" the design, you know that "do you want to start developing the design for construction? This will cost x money and y months" message). You can significantly shorten/cheapen this, if you develop from an existing ship and don't change too much.

Have you updated to 1.12? Apparently the initial installer is still at 1.0. There's a pinned thread for updates. With a link to the latest update. Download that and run it, it SHOULD find your install and you can just keep on hitting next.
