I was a little surprised to find that the game is so rigid on the creation of BBs - you must be able to build with 3+ centreline turrets. Whilst I acknowledge that HMS Dreadnought was fitted with 3 centreline turrets, a number of (paper) designs were in existence prior to this whereby the extra heavy guns were wing mounted and not centreline mounted.
It is also rather amusing to be able to build very powerfully armed BCs and CAs, yet the "heavy" ships are limited to mere Bs.
The proposal is that Main Battery Wing Turrets provide an alternative pathway to being able to produce BBs.

Sounds more like a bug to me, what was the BB you tried to create? A Nassau-style layout usually is classed as a BB.

Duh. Problem might lie between screen and chair - not sure I tried to custom build one.
However, asking for an auto-designed one always failed - so at the very least, that might need looking at.

actually you can build BBs right from the start of the game, as long as it's 23kts or faster and it has 12.5" of belt armour or more - this is an example, not a serious build

Iirc, a number of pre-dreadnaughts had 2x2 12" guns, plus wing turrets of 8-10".
The RN Armoured cruisers were of comparable displacement to the Battleship, though larger (faster), and less heavily armed and armoured. Pretty much the equivalent of 2nd class battleships.

Indeed, the Satsuma *almost* beat the Dreadnought into being the first all single-calibre big gun warship, only for a lack of 12" barrels to foil that plan. As one article says, can't see that name defining a generation of warships.
Yes, I've done the late pre-dreadnought, or semi-dreadnought as some call them, with a battery of 10" secondaries in wing guns - unfortunately it doesn't work that well due to fire control limitations.
