The validation in this area of the screen is a bit buggy. - The mines box will allow users to add mines to KE (corvettes), which are not allowed to carry them. When the user is designing a KE, the (max #) next to the box should be 0, and the user should not be able to enter values into the box.
- When the user changes the tonnage of a ship, the validation on the input box does not update. For example, if the user starts with a 1500-ton DD, the (max #) value reads (max 16) and the user can enter any value from 0 to 16. However, if the user increases the tonnage to 2000, the (max #) properly increases to (max 20), but the user cannot enter values higher than 16 into the box.
- When the user is designing ships other than DD or KE, the "Minesweeping gear" checkbox should be grayed out and not selectable.

I've edited the thread title to indicate that this still happens in 1.18; also, this seems to be the same issue mentioned here: nws-online.proboards.com/thread/4541/ship-design-disallows-mines-loadoutA workaround if your ship design won't allow the right number of mines is to save the design, don't start developing it for construction, then re-open the design. The mines box will now allow the correct number of mines to be added.

On a related note, if you auto-design an AMC before developing "Active Mine Warfare", the design will often include mines and therefore be illegal; however, the "Mines" box and arrows are greyed out, so you can't actually remove the mines to fix the design

A workaround if your ship design won't allow the right number of mines is to save the design, don't start developing it for construction, then re-open the design. The mines box will now allow the correct number of mines to be added. An easier workaround is to change the ship type to something else and then back.
