Hi everybody,
I'm not sure how to determine the better fire control systems... It's 1907 I have 3 options... 'Local Only', 'Central Rangefinder', 'Central Firing". I assumed that the list is progressing with the lower option being more advanced, yet I continue to receive research messages of rangefinder improvements. Should I be using Central Rangefinder or is Center Firing more advanced? Thanks!

Over time the quality of rangefinding improves, not just the type. Go with Central Firing as it's the most precise. I believe the difference is that central rangefinder only has a central sighting post that only observes and corrects, while the guns are still fired by a gunner inside the turret; while central firing means that the actual firing of guns is synchronized and triggered electrically from a central command post, which allows for more precise timing and ranging of shots, and also for better roll compensation.
I believe the game will warn you in any case if you design a ship with less advanced fire control than what you could have.

Actually the game wont let you choose anything except the most advanced FC the ship can have. There may be an exception for rebuilds, idk.

I'm thinking it's a carryover from the SAI ship editor then. That said, there's no real reason to choose anything except the latest since it doesn't have any negative effect on ship weight our performance. The only thing that adds weight is FC positions, but you can add or remove those regardless of the system used, and it seems like central firing gets established as standard quite early on anyway.

I'm curious what having 3 FC positions does. I assume that its just for redundancy, but if anyone could confirm that.

All above one is just redundancy. Ships will not split fire in RTW. They did so extremely rarely in reality, and I know no case in the period.

What exactly is the difference if you click the box "director" under secondary guns? What is the advantage or disadvantage?

Director gives the secondary battery a centralized fire control system just like the main battery (making them overall more accurate). If you don't have a director, they're all under individual local fire control. The downside I guess is weight.

Director for secondaries seem doesn't add any weight, so I think there are no downsides to have it.

Just out of curiosity - does the fire control type have any impact on ROF? Intuitively, it'd seem like centrally-controlled batteries would be firing a bit slower than locally-aimed ones, though I'm not sure if that's actually true.
