If you select the ships moving to an order and press the arrow back, the ships disappear from the lists and cancel move order doesn't do anything.

Are you sure they're disappearing? The ships in the righthand pane get sent to the end of the list in the righthand pane, and if there's more than one page of ships present, you'll have to scroll down to see them.

I selected all the ships in west africa(about a dozen) and clicked the arrow which points to the left. The ships then disappeared from the list in the righthand pane. This does not cancel the move and neither does the cancel move order.
I found out M is a quick key for move orders, I managed to cancel it by ordering them to move from west africa to west africa. But there was a weird thing where they wanted to go to northern europe first but next turn it was fine.

The process to cancel a move is awkward and irritating. Here's what you need to do.
Select a ship that has been ordered to move and open the move dialog. The ships scheduled to move will be in the right panel. To cancel the move you need to select the desired ships and move them back into the left panel. Find them in the left panel and select them again and then press the "Cancel move" button. Nothing in the screen will change but the orders will have been canceled. Use the "Close" button to exit the screen and then check the ships in the "Ships in service" tab. You will see that the move has been canceled.
(This a particularly bad UI design. The UI should provide immediate feedback showing that the move has been canceled, rather than the result being hidden from the user, forcing him to verify it in a completely different dialog.)

It does not work like that since no ships move to the left panel.
EDIT: just tried it out with ships already in the left pane, I think it's a glitch that if you have no ships in the left pane, they disappear?

Sometimes the ships disappear from the AREA move lists, when playing for a while (I think there's a memory issue). Save and reload, and they should be there.

i only found that out last week skimming the manual looking for the the tonnage formula for FS ships (which i couldn't find)
pg7 There are also a few other useful key shortcuts for selected ships: C > cancel move, A > active, T > Trade protection, F > Foreign station

skimming the manual looking for the the tonnage formula for FS ships (which i couldn't find) If you're still looking for it, the modified tonnage counting towards station fulfillment is 4000 + [design displacement]/3 for ships displacing over 6,000 tons, +25% of the modified value if fitted for colonial service (i.e. 1.25 * (4000 + [design displacement]/3)). Ships 6,000 tons or smaller count as their displacement, +25% if fitted for colonial service.
Ships with either short range or cramped accommodations cannot be fitted for colonial service and are additionally severely penalized - Cramped Accommodations ships only count for 70% of their modified displacement, Short Range ships only count for 50% of their modified displacement (this used to be 70%, as with Cramped Accommodations, but it changed at some point and I'm not sure why), and Short Range Cramped Accommodations ships only count for 35% of their modified displacement.

Thank you. I have geen playing for 4 years now (starting with RTW1) and I didnĀ“t manage to stop movements properly. I normally start to click anything in the movement UI and at any point the ship has stopped. Or I let them do their stuff and hope nothing sirious happens.
