One of the things I like to do in my games is to save them at particular milestones that permit me to go back and pick them back up and make different choices. This is especially useful in a game like this one, where I tend to play the first 20-30 turns in a fairly standard way. It would be great to start a game as a particular country, play it forward a given number of turns, save, and then continue playing until my ultimate victory or humiliation.
Unfortunately, in this game, even if you copy the save file at a certain point and store the save elsewhere, restoring the saved file often leads to errors, because (I believe) of the way the stored file's ship models interact with the models that were in the game at the point the previous one was restored. Thus to make a successful system of restored saves, I think it would be necessary for the engine to delete existing ship models -- and perhaps other things, too -- and insert the ones from the save.
In any case, this si one thing I would love to see in this game. I am hoping that others might like it, too.

You need to back up the whole folder "GameX" when X is slot number.
The save is not a single file but the whole folder.
I do it regularly (right click on folder, 7zip - you get file less than 1 MB so easily posted even on this forum) and it works fine.
When you need to restore that back up, you need delete the GameX folder first and than unpack save there.

Thanks, dorn. I thought that's what I had been doing, but perhaps not.
But in any case the game COULD make all this easier!
