You should be able to right click on a ship in the division popup window in the tactical battle simulator and detach it.
Note that I know I have made a number of suggestions recently, but I just purchased the game (which I am enjoying) and I am coming at the game from a beginners perspective and am noticing things that I'm sure the veteran players don't even notice anymore. All the changes I have proposed seem like fairly straightforward UI changes that make the game easier to play, with fewer button clicks.
