Each time I attempt to run the game I get a message 'To contact software publisher to obtain version of game that will run' or words to that effect. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Hello, I've ran SAS on Windows 8.0 with no issues...do you have the Windows 8.1 update? I ask because I have not tried the game out on that version yet. Edit: This sounds possibly like an issue with 32 bit vs 64 bit JAVA installation (SAS is a Java-based game). Make sure you have the proper version of JAVA installed i.e. a 64-bit version if your OS is 64 bit, a 32 bit version if your OS is 32 bit.

Sorry, I posted before I saw your reply. How can I check that I have proper version of Java? Thanks.

Make sure you have the proper version of JAVA installed i.e. a 64-bit version if your OS is 64 bit, a 32 bit version if your OS is 32 bit. William: I just loaded the basic version from the disk on my Windows 8.1 32bit system. I tried to install the updates, starting with 1.19 beta and they would not load. I tried to run the game, but it could not find Java. I installed Java and the game now says it cannot find Java. I am going to reboot then try again.
EDIT: Reboot did not fix the problem. However, I went to the NWS directory, and found the JAR file executable. The program now works. I performed a "send to desktop" to create a shortcut, and that works. If you install it in desktop, I would not use the shortcut, it probably won't be able to find Java if it is loaded. It's a path problem. I have managed to get the updates to install by downloading them to the desktop in Windows 8.1 then right click and "run as administrator". You will get a message from the smartscreen saying that it won't run this unknown apps. Just click on "more info" and tell it to "run anyway". This works. Windows 8 application security is much tighter than Win 7 and earlier, so that has to be taken into account. The game will only run in desktop.
FYI - The system is a dell that is about eight years old and it runs Win 8.1 perfectly with no issues, If that helps at all. I can get more specs if needed.

Baten52,
I believe Dennis has a good idea: locate the folder where your SAS game is installed at, double-click on the "SASWW2.jar" file located there to see if the game launches. If it does, then you can create a shortcut for that file on your desktop to launch it. Please let us know if that works or not...

SAS-WW2 working OK in 'Windows 10'.
'Windows 10' applied as an upgrade to an existing 'Windows 8.1' setup and as the advice noted in earlier posts was applied to the original system, it was probably carried over into the upgraded installation.
