During a discussion, some ideas surfaced themselves - I thought to share them, although I'll try to "tailor" them to be relatively viable(?) in context of the game.
1.) Torpedo paths on the AAR map
Ideally, aerial torpedoes would be marked as well, if possible, indicated with a different color compared to surface launched torpedoes. In the same manner, dive bombing / level bombing hits could get an icon on the map as well, with their own toggle. This idea came forth after a discussion in which we couldn't conclude wether or not a screening destroyer ate an aerial torpedo intended for a carrier they escorted. Strictly speaking this wouldn't necessarily help with that either, but it would still be an interesting addition.
2.) Improved plane types incorporated into the acquisition system
This would ultimately be in essence purely cosmetic, but currently iirc the emergence of an improved subtype of an already existing type (Airplane I. A -> Airplane I. B) basically indicates that the player is "slacking off" in that specific a/c role with manual requests, and the AI takes the wheel. There is no option for the player to manually tinker with the existing type afaik, which is on one hand understandable, but on the other hand there may be an interesting solution to this: bringing improved types (practically pretty much just renaming one of the types into the already existing model + improvement) into tenders in a similar manner:
Player operates Fighter model uh, I don't k... fighter model Canned Tuna. When requesting for proposals, now it would have a chance for one of the types to be "Canned Tuna B". This would open up the possibility of the manufacturer of the "old type" to enter the tender with the same, yet improved type narratively speaking.
3.) Modifications for air combat
Currently pretty much the only two ways to counter a given enemy in the air are:
- Local numerical superiority
- Building new a/c types.
- Local numerical superiority
- Building new a/c types.
We've came up with two vague ideas concerning this:
1.) Pop-up events. "Based on the last dogfight, our fighter model appears to be inadequate. However, one of your pilots had an idea!" (+2 firepower for that one specific type currently in service, -2 Prestige)
2.) Doctrines, perhaps as tools to immediately and temporarily respond to issues. Report: "Based on the last encounter, the enemy planes are outturning us! (>> maneuverability)" Possibility to select something along the line of "Don't dogfight, go for boom and zoom": (-1 maneuverability, -1 speed, +2 firepower, +1 durability for the duration the order is active - now I'm naturally just throwing up numbers onto the table, but that's beside the point), or "Strict TB discipline" (-1 maneuverability, -1 speed, -30% to dud torpedoes)
