Hey, all,
I remember reading something about a pair of Russian river monitors that were constructed with completely circular hulls.
The idea was that the circular hull would somehow make them faster, if I recall.
In reality, where hydrodynamics laughs in the face of such designs, the ships were cripplingly slow.
I believe the designs date to the transitional period between ironclad and pre-dreadnought.
Does anyone know anything more about this absurd pair of ships?

"However, Czar Alexander II apparently still liked the design enough that when Popov proposed a round Imperial yacht the Emperor agreed!" - from the article above.
News to me. I suppose a round yacht has more deck space for entertaining?

Can you imagine that yacht in anything but glass smooth conditions? What a barf barge, no wonder they used it to haul coal instead.
