I've been having issues with the "Detach from formation" command in my campaigns. Sometimes the ship detaches but keeps on following its group and eventually rejoins. Sometimes it even does this when it's auto detached, resulting in repeatedly joining and automatically detaching on the same turn. Similarly, It's hard to tell if a ship is returning to port if you gave it a "detach" order while it was already auto-detached (due to close enemy or damage).
My suggestion is that when you click on a friendly AI-controlled ship, it shows a little message saying what it's intentions are. e.g. an auto-detached ship might say "engaging close enemy" or "rejoining Battle Cruiser Division 20", while a manually detached ship might say "Returning to base Willhelmshaven" or similar. Basically give better feedback so we can tell when a ship is actually returning to base.
(note: I've seen ships I detached return to base when set to both "core" and "independent", so that isn't a good way of telling)
The second part of my suggestion is making RTB waypoints, or making them visible to the player. I recently fought France as Germany and had several engagements in the Bay of Biscay. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not but some of my detached ships seemed to steam NW.
This makes some sense if they intend to travel around the british isles or similar. This gave me an idea: why not let the player set 1-2 waypoints that their detached ships will follow when returning to base? This would let them tell their ships to transit a channel, or to move away from enemy air cover before turning for home. I think having these be pre-set as part of the battle location would also be acceptable, as long as they were visible to the player.
Anyways, those are my 2 suggestions: Better feedback on what detached/independent ships are doing, and a waypoint system for RTB from awkward locations.
