The attached Results.png shows the after action report from an engagement I recently fought (as Russia) against a combination of British and French forces. As you can see it was a convoy attack mission where in the end, every merchant ship in the convoy, plus a few escorting vessels were despatched to Mr Jones Locker.
Working on the assumption that the figures in this report can be taken as accurate, something struck me as odd. The GB KE Border Knight was sunk after firing 14 rounds of its ammo. But the Ammo remaining column shows it to have 0% remaining.
I checked the design file for this class of ship in the save folder, and it shows the vessel to be a 300t KE with a single 3” gun and an RPG value of 150. So having fired 14 rounds of its 150, it should have 91% ammo remaining, not 0%. Even if it had fired 140 rounds not 14, it would still have 6% remaining.
The obvious explanation for this is due to the action of a wee cowrin tim’rous beastie lurking within the code. However, another possibility occurred to me that I thought I would make enquiries about.
Does the game model shortage of ammo due to say being blockaded or having lots of your merchant ships sunk? If it does (or even if it doesn’t) it suggests an addition to the game whereby you, as head of the Navy, have to allocate whichever resources are in short supply, to your ships. Do you give priority to the big ships, leaving the DD’s and KE’s to go short. Or do you allocate resources evenly to all ships? I think this would be an interesting addition to the game. For those who don’t want this level of management, just leave it to the AI to allocate.
A second question relating to ammo is. How can the various Naval Air Stations have 154% ammo? I would have thought that either they are fully provisioned, or they are not.
A totally unrelated question is. Does the game set an upper limit for the number of survivors that can be picked up by a single ship? This question arises due to the fact that during the course of the engagement, my DD’s Bravi and Zidane were repeatedly detached in order to rescue survivors from sinking merchant and escort ships. Nothing wrong with that of course. But the report shows that at the end of the engagement, Bravi and Zidane had managed to collect 155 and 137 survivors respectively. These numbers are far greater than the complement of the ships, and DD’s of this era are pretty small anyway. So where do they put all these folk?
If it were an action in the Med, or in the tropics, they could probably keep them on deck with no serious issues, other than sunstroke perhaps. But in the case of the Baltic or the North Sea in winter, keeping probably soaking wet sailors out on deck would not be ideal. I would think that many of the survivors wouldn’t be survivors for very long under such conditions!
