This is based on my experiences playing as Spain and China, but I'm finding that late missile age spawning ranges combined with the course lock are resulting in fairly boring one-note battles. Scenario starts and almost immediately ships start getting detected and locked onto. By the time the course lock turns off hundreds of missiles are already flying. There isn't much room for planning, maneuvering, setting out pickets, or even getting aircraft in the air.
I get that these scenarios are two fleets meeting in an engagement, but in this age they shouldn't be sailing blind directly into engagement range, especially with support carriers closer to the enemy which I've seen happen a few times. Also in this era it shouldn't be as difficult for two fleets to find each other if they spawn further away from one another like in larger carrier battles.
I'd like to see some increased ranges once missiles takes over, even if it means longer battle times for the smaller engagements. Of course since I'm playing Spain and China I'm mostly talking about small engagements and cruiser battles. I rarely get carrier battles or fleet battles playing these nations. Or at the very least the ability to disable the course lock so that I can at least try to maneuver away before the missile swarm is unleashed or get out some pickets/scouts.
This spawn ranges make playing Spain and China even more difficult than any other era. Even in "small engagements" the AI often shows up with about two or more dozen ships than you. You can at least do things in other eras like run for cover or try to but once the 1960's hit and every ship has h/m SSMs, most battles have been, scenario begins->forces blindly plow into enemy ->get swarmed with missile->send missiles back->get consumed by the blob of AI ships
